Gospel texts dealing with the killing of the prophets:

Matthew 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. . . .Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, . . .that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

Luke 11:47 Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. . .for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. . . .Wisdom of God said, `I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute, . . .the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation, . . .from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation.

The "blood of Zechariah" (the son of Jehoiada) in Luke is a reference to 2 Chronicles 24: 17-21,

17 Now after the death of Jehoiada the princes of Judah came and did obeisance to the king; then the king hearkened to them. 18 And they forsook the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherim and the idols. And wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their guilt. 19 Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the LORD; these testified against them, but they would not give heed. 20 Then the Spirit of God took possession of Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, "Thus says God, `Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.'" 21 But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the LORD.

The reference to "the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah" is a reference to Zechariah 1:1, "The word of the LORD came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah, son of Iddo, the prophet, saying, . . . . " and Zechariah 13:3, "And if any one again appears as a prophet, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, `You shall not live, for you speak lies in the name of the LORD'; and his father and mother who bore him shall pierce him through when he prophesies."

Jesus appears to be quoting Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 2:30 "In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion."

Jer 26: 20 "There was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from Kiriathjearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like those of Jeremiah. 21 And when King Jehoiakim, with all his warriors and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Uriah heard of it, he was afraid and fled and escaped to Egypt. 22 Then King Jehoiakim sent to Egypt certain men, Elnathan the son of Achbor and others with him, 23 and they fetched Uriah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, who slew him with the sword and cast his dead body into the burial place of the common people."

Prophets may have been among those slain by King Manasseh:

2 Kings 21:6, "Moreover Manasseh shed very much innocent blood, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another, besides the sin which he made Judah to sin so that they did what was evil in the sight of the LORD."

Note also 2 Chronicles 18:25ff, "And the king of Israel said, "Seize Micaiah, and take him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king's son; 26 and say, `Thus says the king, Put this fellow in prison, and feed him with scant fare of bread and water, until I return inpeace.'"

King Ahab never returned, and Micaiah, presumably perished in prison.
